If you crave the calm, open seas of deep blue water, or 15-knot winds with significant waves, or the occasional freighter encounter—or even if you’ve never sailed and want to get certified—Big Sable Point is the perfect place to set sail. Yes, it’s quite a contrast—but that’s what makes sailing sailing.
As the first landfall for North-bound vessels out of Chicago, you can expect to make way for freighters in what some frequent sailors call “Freighterland.” You’ll know you’re close when you see the 1867-built Big Sable Point Lighthouse.
Tack out a little farther for one of two things: a challenging battle with the Big Lake’s waves, or some of the most peaceful scenes you’ll ever see. While it’s wise to check the sailing reports before going out, you can be assured this area offers the best of both worlds.
