Beaches
Here’s the best way to describe the Ludington beaches—even as it gets late, and the sun goes down, and the temperature drops, you can’t force yourself to leave. They’re too gorgeous, too relaxing, too enjoyable to give up.
Surrounded by the scenic Nordhouse dunes, Ludington beaches offer miles of sand so soft it could be called orthotic sand. The state park alone has six miles of beaches, equipped with food stands, kite rentals, bicycles, ATVs, mopeds and watersport toys.
The state park also has eight marked hiking trails, covering over 16 miles of ground, complete with information kiosks. You should definitely try the Skyline Trail, which gives you extraordinary views of Lake Michigan and the sand dunes from its elevated wooden walkway.
For a booming swimming spot, try Stearns Park Beach. For shallow, warm waters, visit the Hamlin Lake Beach. Do you prefer quieter, less crowded beaches? Just south of Ludington, the beautiful Buttersville Park Beach is waiting.
Whatever type of beachgoer you are—the relaxing-in-the-sand type, the spending-hours-in-the-water-on-machinery type, the strolling type—Ludington accommodates better than any other beach on the Big Lake. Perhaps that’s why the Detroit Free Press rated Ludington’s beach #1 in the state in 2007.
